A new way to impro…play!
- Outdoor events can be booked by festivals, community hubs, friends of parks etc.
- We can set up & provide equipment. Or we can work with you the partner to put on the event.
- This is a wonderful way to support audience & participation development as we meet children & families for the first time in a new area, get to know the community, chat to locals and spread the word about local improplay/arts events.
Recommended length: 45mins-1hr in each location.
Max 3 x locations in one day.
Team of either 3 or 6 Improplay members (always with 1 live musician) on the road dependent on size of festival/event.
Previous events: Theatre Hullabaloo Little Wonders Commission ‘Hullabaloo in the Park’ 2021, Wetherby Arts Festival (2019 & 2020), Middleton Park (2020 & 2021).

Thank You to everyone involved with todays events, your hard work has brought dance and movement into our beautiful Wetherby green spaces and made the world a bit more 'normal' for a day
ONLINE IMPROPLAY
During COVID 19, we moved our research project online. Dancers researched and developed Improplay in the studio, zooming into schools and homes throughout the 3 week residency. We developed a method of working online, which allowed us to reach a high quality of movement exploration, learning and exchange.
Overall we developed:
- An online method of delivery for Improplay.
- Delivered high quality live music and dance workshops to schools and children at home.
- Delivered 1-1 hello intro sessions & 1-1 workshops to children at home with additional needs/autism.
- Developed an activity pack, posted to 15 children’s homes, through our partnership with Wetherby Arts Festival.
I was quite overwhelmed as to how online through zoom you managed to connect with the children on an emotional and physical level, thus connecting with me. There was such a freedom, playfulness and focus in the connection, it was surprising, refreshing and beautiful.
Want to host an online exchange?
Have you got a group of children, teachers or dance artists who would like to take part in a improplay exchange online?
Share, dance, talk and exchange via our zoom exchange programme. This can be in the form of a one-off 1-2hr workshop, or it can be part of a longer performance project.

INTERNATIONAL IMPROPLAY
We have been arranging international partnerships with Nurseries/Schools, Dance Festivals and Organisations in Italy, Germany, Ireland and Canada, including research with The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI). These are both online and inperson partnerships, bespoke to what is of interest and can include a hybrid of delivery, integrating Improplay into your local community and offering participants exchange opportunities.
Note: Katy Hewison is a native English speaker only, although Improplay is highly accessible, using non verbal communication and unique approaches, to support children to develop english as an additional language (EAL). Katy holds extensive experience working with non English speaking children over the last four years through work in UNICEF schools, UK, Irish and Italian Schools.
With Thanks to La Casa di Elisa, Italy & Peter Glasel Stiftung Germany. Please get in touch if you would like to talk further about developing an international partnership.
